The Weekend Wake-Up

The Weekend Wake-Up is a series of FREE multi-generational community events that showcase youth talent in hip-hop and other urban art forms, and connect young artists to their conscious professional counterparts in the community. The Weekend Wake-Up is a collaborative project, founded by Desi of Weapons of Mass Expression (W.O.M.E), and now facilitated by Bay Area youth and a coalition of their adult allies, support agencies, and community programs.

The Weekend Wake-Up is intended to bring youth together from a diverse array of neighborhoods in order to break down the pre-conceived notions about each other and build relationships across their communities.  Utilizing the skills that they develop in after-school and community programs, students utilize their talents in their traditional setting, dancing and performing both live on stage and in spontaneous ciphers, painting live artwork, and even creating the musical mixes.

While based in Oakland, the Weekend Wake-Up is reaching out to San Francisco and the rest of the Bay Area to connect all of the communities throughout the Bay.  This year, two of the seven events presented will be held in San Francisco.

In addition to attending the events, a student planning committee, made up of students from the youth programs in the coalition, will learn about each other’s resources by travelling to their sites and learning about their facilities. Youth and community programs from throughout the Bay Area are always welcome to participate.  To learn about ways to partner with us and collaborate click here.
